Elegy

You threw away my flowers
But I suppose they had
Fulfilled their purpose
It was all so—
Temporary in nature

I’m trying to remember
I’m trying to forget
In equal measure
The pain
The pleasure
What remains is mine to treasure
An elegy to these blossoms

Like the time you traced
The ridges in my finger nails
With your fingertips
Studying ever line
As time goes by
These moments become divine

Or the time I almost crashed my car
On Silverlake boulevard
Drove in west from afar
To give you the shirt right off my back

Or how our eyes briefly met
When the music played loud
In the concert crowd
And for a moment we didn’t hide
Put away our pride
The deceit and betrayal
Was just another tale
One best laid to rest
So I write an elegy to these blossoms

Temporary nature
The floodgates open
Every bond made
Is one made unbroken
So I recite an elegy to these blossoms

I’m trying to remember
I’m trying to forget
In equal measure
All the pain
And all the pleasure
What remains I’ll be sure treasure

For there’s no going back
And nothing lasts for forever
Save—
An elegy to these blossoms
